When Do the Balloons Fly? The Best Month for a Cappadocia Photoshoot
Almost every message we get starts the same way: “We're coming in March — will there be balloons?” It is the right question to ask, and the honest answer is longer than a yes or no. We live in Göreme and we are out in the valleys before dawn most mornings of the year, so here is what we actually see.
Balloons do not fly every morning
Hot-air balloon flights in Cappadocia are cleared each morning by the Turkish civil aviation authority, and the call is made in the dark — usually around 4 a.m., a couple of hours before take-off. Wind is the deciding factor, occasionally fog or snow. Across a full year roughly two mornings out of three are flyable, but that average hides big seasonal swings.
No photographer, hotel or tour agency can promise you balloons on a specific date. Anyone who does is selling you something they do not control. What we can do is put you in the right valley at the right minute when they do fly — and give you a session that stands on its own when they don't.

So which month is best?
If you can choose freely, come in late April to early June or late September to late October. In those windows the balloons fly on most mornings, the dawn air is comfortable enough to stand still in a thin dress, and the valleys are not yet washed out by summer heat. Those are also the weeks our calendar fills first — couples usually book them two to four months ahead.
If you want snow, come in January or February and accept the trade: fewer flying mornings, but frames almost nobody else has. Some of the most striking photographs we have ever taken were on mornings when the balloons stayed on the ground.
If your dates are already fixed
Most of our guests cannot choose — the honeymoon is booked, the flights are paid. That is fine, and it changes very little about the shoot. Here is what we do:
- We shoot at sunrise anyway. The light at dawn is the reason to be there; the balloons are the bonus on top of it.
- We watch the forecast with you. If your stay is three mornings long, we will tell you which one looks best rather than defaulting to the first.
- We have a plan for grounded mornings. Cave hotel terraces, the lantern and carpet shops, valley viewpoints and the wild horses at sunset do not depend on the wind at all.
What time does a sunrise session actually start?
Earlier than most people expect. Sunrise moves from around 5:30 in June to close to 8:00 in late December, and we collect you from your hotel roughly an hour before it — so a June pick-up can be at 4:30 in the morning. It is a short night, and it is the single best decision you will make about your photographs. By the time the valleys are full of day-trippers, we are finished and you are back at breakfast.
Short answers
- Do balloons fly in winter? Yes, on calm mornings — just far less often.
- Is sunset a good alternative? Yes, but balloons only fly at dawn. Sunset is for golden valleys and the wild horses.
- How far ahead should we book? Two to four months for spring and autumn; a few weeks is often enough in winter.
- What if it rains on our date? We move the session to another morning of your stay whenever your schedule allows.
